Masked Gunman Opens Fire on Utah Muslim Imam During Ramadan

(MENAFN) A masked gunman opened fire on a Muslim leader outside his Utah home during Ramadan, authorities and local reports said Tuesday.

The attack took place Monday evening in suburban Salt Lake City, targeting Shuaib Din, the imam of the Utah Islamic Center, the state’s largest mosque. Din was unharmed, though his vehicle sustained multiple bullet strikes, as stated by reports.

Din told authorities that a man had been waiting in a car outside his residence before opening fire as he left for evening prayers.

“He knew my house, knew my car, knew my schedule,” Din said.

Din explained that he had just finished breaking his fast with his family at home, about two minutes from the mosque. As he drove out of his garage, the gunman, wearing a mask and hoodie, exited a vehicle and fired several shots before fleeing.

After calling 911, Din tried to note the suspect’s license plate. The gunman then returned, pulled alongside Din’s car, and fired at least eight additional rounds. Bullets hit the windshield as well as the front and rear seats, Din said. He briefly attempted to chase the suspect but later gave up.

Police said no arrests have been made. Authorities released images of the suspected vehicle, described as a white passenger car that may have damage or a loose piece beneath the front passenger-side bumper.
